The audience at Los Angeles’ Forum gave George Michael a special present just before the second half of his two-hour performance Wednesday: a spontaneous arena-wide “happy birthday to you” for the English singer, who turned 45 on Wednesday.

There were more birthday rounds toward the end of the night, including one from his band, plus a cake from actress Bo Derek. But Michael already had given his fans the gift of a stylish, career-spanning show as part of his first North American tour in 17 years, returning to this venue after two decades.

Wearing all black and in glasses, Michael still looks a touch boyish, though he clearly is heading into middle age — like a good part of his audience that included soccer moms and dads and other couples, gay and straight. Opening with “Waiting (Reprise),” he set the night’s theme with lyrics such as “there’s a way back for every man” and proved he’s on top of his game on his own terms.

By halfway through the evening, Michael had the full house dancing and singing along without the need for a phalanx of dancers and production numbers with myriad costume changes (are you listening, Madonna?).

The staging certainly was impressive, full of dazzle, sparkle and rainbow hues of lighting coupled with vivid video images. A trio of screens included one rolling up from the stage floor onto the center of the three-tier scaffolding where Michael’s band played, while a wide catwalk led to another smaller stage at the center of the arena.

Yet despite all the flash and glitz, the music always came first, the arrangements big but tasteful and even sometimes surprisingly understated for the more subtle songs.

He picked up the pace with pulsing “Fastlove” and the bouncy “I’m Your Man,” dating back to his mid-’80s start in the bubblegum-poppy Wham! as black-and-white footage of those so-young days appeared on the screens. Those Wham! tunes received some of the biggest screams and cheers, including the funky strut of “Everything She Wants.”

A gospel-styled “One More Try,” accompanied only by piano, found him interacting in the round with his coed sextet of backing singers. He struck a musical equilibrium between the ballads and upbeat songs, though some of the Eurotrash dance club material came off a bit like filler.

Amy Winehouse might have to miss Glastonbury and the Nelson Mandela concert next week, the singer’s spokesman has admitted.

The troubled singer is booked to play at Mandela’s 90th birthday concert in Hyde Park on Friday June 27 followed by Glastonbury, directly before headliner Jay-Z, the following day.

But Winehouse, who has fought heroin and crack addiction, is still in a London clinic awaiting the results of tests following her collapse at home.

A spokesman said Winehouse still intended to perform at both high-profile events, but that that doctors would decide whether she was well enough to take to the stage.

He said: “Amy has undergone more scans and tests and we are awaiting the verdict of her doctors.

“At present, she still intends to perform at the two scheduled dates next week. However, a decision will be made entirely upon the advice of her doctors and in her best interests.”

Winehouse, 24, has been in the London Clinic since being taken there by her father Mitch after fainting at her home in Camden, north London, on Monday.

THE British singer has revealed a new statement regarding her involvements on “Quantum of Solace” movie soundtrack claiming that she has written a new song for it.

The news about Amy Winehouse’s involvements on the new James Bond movie “Quantum of Solace” takes another twist on its turn. After recent reports claim that Amy won’t be taking part on the film’s soundtrack, the singer has confirmed that she is writing a song for it.

The British singer confirms the news to the Mirror newspaper, while attending the Ivor Novello Awards. To the newspaper, Amy stated that she has finished the song and is still waiting for the movie’s producer approval. “I’ve written the song. If they like it they like it, if they don’t they don’t,” she said.

Amy’s statement is also supported by her producer Mark Ronson, who said that the troubled singer wrote the song in an acoustic guitar and he helps her on the music arrangement. “Amy wrote the song on an acoustic guitar. It was my job to help with the arrangement and realise the sound that we were going for. So that was my role,” Mark said.

Previously, it was Mark who told the press that Amy won’t be taking part on the upcoming bond movie, saying, “Unless by some miracle of science it gets recorded and someone sings a vocal.” However, the “Rehab” singer’s representative has a different opinion about it, saying, “Mark has presented a track to Amy, but she had other ideas about the direction it should take. She has always made her own decisions about her music.”

In other news, Amy herself recently has just won an award at the Ivor Novello. The singer managed to take home the award for Best Song Musically and Lyrically for her single “Love Is A Losing Game”.
