NYC mayor vows to shut OTB, despite governor’s plan

New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg said he will still shut the money-losing Off-Track Betting Corporation on Sunday, despite the last-minute state takeover the governor cobbled together on Friday. The OTB is a quasi-governmental agency the city runs. A spokesman for Gov. David Paterson was not immediately available to say what additional measures the state could take.

“The City of New York still has substantial legal and economic issues that need to be settled before the future of off-track betting in the five boroughs is resolved — and it is very disappointing that these concerns have not been addressed,” the mayor, an independent, said in a statement.

Bloomberg, saying the city deserves the same benefits the agency gives other localities, was reacting to the governor’s mid-afternoon Friday announcement of a takeover.

The Democratic governor said the deal will save 1,500 jobs, although the mayor on a Friday morning radio show had said most of the workers would be kept on for the next three months while operations were wound down.

The agency takes in $1.1 billion of wagers a year, 42 percent of the total amount bet on horses in the state, according to Paterson.

But the Off-Track Betting Corporation cost the city $13 million a year, according to mayoral aides.
