Monday, April 7th, 2008 - No Comments »

ONEsite, Inc., the leading provider of enterprise community and social networking software, announced today the launch of its new Class A datacenter and a series of wide ranging performance enhancements to the patent-pending technology of the ONEsite Platform.“It took two years to grow through 1 million users and now we are growing at 1 million users every two months,” said Bob Crull, ONEsite’s CEO. “Our platform is both flexible and fast. If a company wants to engage their users, we have the software and infrastructure to ensure it is a pleasant experience.”

With media and entertainment clients that include Clear Channel and Univision, ONEsite has created a system that can not only handle a high volume of day to day traffic, but the capability to deliver a consistent user experience even under an intense spike in traffic. The latest enhancements provide a 10x increase in performance and the capability to handle over 20 million users with hardware on hand and rapidly scale to support exponential growth.

The ONEsite platform is architected to scale horizontally. Its caching strategy delivers 70-90% of pages directly from the cache while still providing users with an interactive, dynamic experience. The newly launched datacenter and architecture upgrades greatly enhance the effectiveness and capacity of its proprietary clustered server environment.

ONEsite maintains dual datacenters in Oklahoma City and is able to provide consistent operations with the loss of either datacenter. The company is a subsidiary of Catalog.com with a 14 year tradition of delivering innovative, scalability internet applications and services. Ineffective scalability that has crippled many growing social networks and their providers does not affect the ONEsite platform which has been specifically architected to provide the performance and scalability critical to the success of its clients.

Funding your dream

Monday, April 7th, 2008 - 2 Comments »

For emerging companies, landing a capital investment can feel like a Catch-22.

Serious investors want to see examples of previous funding before they feel comfortable handing over their own money. That forces entrepreneurs to ask the question: How do I develop a history without securing investors?

That’s a reality of doing business regardless of when times are good or when the economy is backpedaling, as is the case now.

It is no secret that traditional lenders have tightened their standards, but some venture capitalists, private-equity firms and startup financiers have become more conservative, too, about where and to whom they float their funds.

Still, investors have money to invest. A Dow Jones Private Equity Analyst report released Monday showed that U.S. private-equity firms raised $58.5 billion in 81 different investment funds in the first quarter of 2008, up from $44.3 billion in 68 funds in the year-ago quarter.

“If you’re looking for money, it’s a never-ending process for any kind of venture,” said Thomas Duening, director of entrepreneurial programs at Arizona State University’s Ira A. Fulton School of Engineering.

A new networking Web site is reaching out to college students with an enticing message; “Get On, Get Up and Get Out.”

The concept is simple. CollegeTonight.com allows students to gather information about events, nightlife and promotions within the campus and community. All college students are eligible to make an account with their college e-mail address for no charge.

And co-creator Zach Suchin feels the site is a good fit for University of Miami students.

“We make networks at campuses that have good geographic locations,” Suchin said. “The nightlife has to be alive and active and Miami is obviously known for that. UM is one of the most socially thriving universities in the U.S. There is great school spirit, tons of activities on/around campus, and some of the best clubs/bars in the world.”

The networking site was created by Suchin, a 2006 graduate of Emory University, and Jason Schutzbank, a junior at Emory.

With the motto in mind, Zuchin said: “We want students to get on their computer and gather the information, get up from their physical seat and then get out into the real world and make connections with people.”

Suchin originally conceived the site on a small server called Emory Nightlife, which he used to communicate with his friends about what was going on locally. Suchin said he also made deals with local bars and nightclubs so they could promote themselves.

“This way everyone knew what was going on that particular night. Soon around 65 to 80 percent of the campus population wanted to join the server,” he said.

The Atlanta Journal Constitution wrote an article about Emory Nightlife and the word spread.

How to stay safe on social networks

Wednesday, April 2nd, 2008 - No Comments »

social networks.jpgAn Ofcom report has come out today, warning of the dangers to children who are unaware of the risks of leaving your personal info to run free on your social networks. There’s 25% of 8-11 year olds who have sneakily ticked the ‘yeah, I am *totally* the right age to use one of these things’ when really they should have stayed away.

But it’s not just a kid-based thing - most of us are guilty of sharing a little too much online, so here are a few tips to keep you safe.

1) If you wouldn’t say it to a stranger, don’t post it
If a man stopped you in the street and asked for your full address, date of birth and email address, would you give it to him? Hell, no. So don’t put it online - that man on the street is a lot harder to trace when he’s nothing more than an IP address.

2) Be aware of your networks

I once posted a post-date analysis on Facebook, thinking the boy in question wouldn’t see it. I didn’t realise that by joining the London network everyone in that could see my full profile - ouch. This is customisable now, so go into the ‘Privacy’ area of FB and check out who you’ve allowed full access to your profile.
