The New York Times says lawyers familiar with MLB’s supposedly confidential drug tests of 2003 say Manny Ramirez and David Ortiz were among the 100-plus players who tested positive for performance-enhancing drugs that year.
Both were members of the Boston Red Sox that season.
Scott Boras, the agent for Ramirez, declined comment.
Ramirez recently completed a 50-game suspension for violating MLB’s drug policy. Ortiz had not previously been directly linked to PED use.
Ortiz told the Times that, “I’m not talking about that anymore,” he said. “I have no comment.”
The Times report continues a series of leaks to the news media about the 2003 tests. Alex Rodriguez confirmed he was on the list after his name was divulged, and the Times reported earlier this year that Sammy Sosa also was among the 104 players who had tested positive. steroids
The 2003 test results were seized by federal agents investigating PED use by professional athletes and became the subject of litigation between the baseball players union and the government.
The Times says its information about Ramirez and Ortiz “emerged through interviews with multiple lawyers and others connected to the pending litigation.” The lawyers spoke anonymously, the Times said, because the testing information is under seal by a court order.
The Times also said lawyers did not specify what were detected.
Ortiz told the Boston Globe earlier this season that anyone who tests positive now should be suspended for a year. Said Ortiz:
“I think you clean up the game by the testing. I test you, you test positive, you’re going to be out. Period. If I test positive using any kind of banned substance I’m going to disrespect the game, my family, my fans and everybody. And I don’t want to face the situation so I won’t use it. I’m sure everybody is on the same page.”
