Miami Dolphins wide receiver Greg Camarillo will miss the rest of the season with a knee injury, coach Tony Sparano said Monday.

Camarillo left Miami’s 48-28 loss to New England in the second half Sunday and did not return. He underwent an MRI on Monday.

“You don’t want to lose a player like that,” Sparano said. “He’s been really productive for us. To me, the guy’s been exactly what you’re looking for on your football team. I’m disappointed for him. I know how important it is for him.”

The tear in Camarillo’s knee ends his breakout year with the Dolphins. He leads the Dolphins with 55 receptions for 613 yards and two touchdowns after catching a total of eight passes in his first two NFL seasons.

“He’s a very, very consistent player,” said Casey Cramer, who has roomed with Camarillo for the past three games. “I just hope that he heals quickly and he gets back out as soon as he can. He’s a great guy.”

Camarillo did not think the injury was season-ending after Sunday’s game, his agent J.R. Rickert said.

“He’s in good spirits considering the circumstances,” Rickert said. “Greg is the kind of guy who really likes going out there every week and laying it on the line with his teammates.”

This is the second time in two years that the Dolphins have lost a key player during a game against the Patriots. Running back Ronnie Brown needed surgery to repair a torn ACL after the Dolphins’ 49-28 loss to New England on Oct. 21, 2007.

Camarillo signed a $6 million, three-year extension this year that will keep him under contract through 2011.

“It hurts to lose Greg, but I think we’ll be fine,” running back Patrick Cobbs said. “I think this team can pick it up and we can definitely move forward.”

Cowboys’ Adam Jones Suspended

Adam Jones, the trouble-prone Dallas Cowboys cornerback, was suspended indefinitely by the National Football League on Tuesday for again violating the league’s personal conduct policy. The suspension will last a minimum of four games, but Cowboys owner Jerry Jones — sometimes speaking of the player in the past tense — sounded resigned to the idea that Jones might not play again this year.

The Green Bay Packers on Saturday trimmed their roster to the NFL limit of 53 players by releasing 19, including running back Vernand Morency.Once thought to be part of the solution at the position for the Packers, Ryan Grant’s emergence in 2007 and former second-round pick Brandon Jackson’s presence on the roster left little room for Morency.

The 27-year-old Morency appeared in 13 games for Green Bay last season - his third NFL campaign - and rushed for 108 yards on 29 carries.

Morency has rushed for 726 yards and four touchdowns in 40 career games with the Houston Texans and Packers.

The Chicago Bears released a pair of 2007 first-day draft picks Saturday when they made the final roster cut to 53 players.

Brett Favre could get paid to stay off the field

brett favre traded to nfl team qb quater back

Brett Favre’s reinstatement to the NFL was held up again Friday as the three-time MVP mulled getting paid not to play through a marketing deal with the Green Bay Packers that could resolve the standoff over his retirement.

The potential agreement, worth a reported $20 million over 10 years, might end Favre’s bid to return just months after retiring. It also would likely keep him from reporting to Packers training camp and a team that is not planning to start him at quarterback for the first time since 1992.

After talking to Packers president and CEO Mark Murphy about the marketing deal Wednesday, Favre confirmed he was considering it to ESPN on Thursday.

Packers coach Mike McCarthy made it clear Friday that, from the team’s perspective, the agreement would be more than a buyout to make an awkward situation go away. In fact, it’s been in the works for months. He first heard about it at Favre’s retirement news conference in March.

“I know Mark Murphy talked to me about it in the past, how important it was for Brett to continue to be part of the organization after he was done playing,” McCarthy said after practice Friday morning. “And frankly, it’s good for Brett. Brett needs to stay a part of football, Obviously, he’s a part of the Green Bay Packers.”
