A new study published in the Nov 2008 issue of Cancer Epidemiol Biomarkers Prev. showed once again that high levels of serum 25-hydroxyvitamin D [25(OH)D] level was linked with reduced risk of lung cancer.

For the prospective cohort study, Kilkkinen A and colleagues of the National Public Health Institute in Helsinki, Finland looked at data on serum vitamin D levels and cases of lung cancer for 6,937 men and women. During a maximum follow-up of 24 years, 122 cases of lung cancer were recorded.

An association between vitamin D and lung cancer risk was observed for the highest versus lowest tertile with the odds ratio 0.72. But the researchers said the link was not statistically significant.

However, the significant association was found among women and young men and women.

For women, those who had highest levels of vitamin D in their blood were 84 percent less likely to develop lung cancer. For younger participants, those with highest levels were 66 percent less likely to have the disease compared to those with the lowest levels.

The researchers concluded that “although there was no overall association between vitamin D and lung cancer risk, women and young participants with a higher level of vitamin D were observed to have a lower lung cancer risk.”

The study was not a trial, but there is a very good chance that the association is a causal relationship. Laboratory studies have already yielded evidence suggesting that vitamin D suppresses lung carcinogenesis.

When Joe Calzaghe steps into a boxing ring in Madison Square Garden on Saturday night, his father, Enzo, will be in his corner, yelling instructions, doing everything he can to keep his son’s undefeated record intact.

When Roy Jones Jr. enters that ring to try to upset Calzaghe and rekindle his glory days, his father, Roy Sr., will be in Pensacola, Fla., watching his son on television, his urgings going unheard.

Calzaghe and Jones were introduced to boxing by their fathers, but their current relationships with the men who started their careers are very different.

Enzo Calzaghe has trained his son for the last 25 years and calls him his best friend. Roy Jones Sr. has not been his son’s primary trainer in more than 15 years. Although the elder Jones said he believed he and his son remained close, their relationship often seems icy.

“I would never lose the love of my child for boxing,” Enzo Calzaghe said in an interview Friday.

“He’s my son and I’m his father,” Roy Jones Sr. said. “As long as that respect is maintained, then I think it’s great.”

Enzo Calzaghe never boxed, but he was a big fan. When his son was growing up, Enzo would roll up old carpets to make punching bags. He would hold up his hands so his son could punch them.

Enzo said he had wanted his son to be a soccer player, but some of the local youth teams passed over him.

“That was the best thing that could have happened,” Enzo said.

When Joe was about 9, Enzo said, he took him to a gym for the first time.

At the end of the day, the trainer came to Enzo and said, “I thought you said he had never boxed before.”

Enzo said his son had not. But the trainer told him that his son looked like “an open-class fighter.” Enzo asked what that meant.

“That means very good,” he was told.

Two years later, Calzaghe won the first of eight amateur national titles.

Calzaghe began his professional career in 1993 and is 45-0. His father has trained him the entire time.

One of the keys to the longevity of their relationship, Enzo said, was that he always put his friendship with his son first. They play soccer and billiards together. Enzo said he also did most training activities with his son.

“If I asked him to do 10 miles, I would do 11,” he said. “I do sit-ups. I do pushups. I do more.”

But things are not always picture perfect between the two.

“I think we have a normal father-and-son relationship,” Joe Calzaghe said. “But like any other relationship, we have our differences. But we always seem to work out our differences. Believe it or not, our personalities are similar. We’re both fiery and passionate.”

Roy Jones Sr., like Enzo Calzaghe, introduced his son to boxing at a young age.

But many have said that Jones Sr. drove his son away because he was too hard on him. Articles have reported that Jones Sr. used to beat his son with a pipe when he trained.

Jones Jr. has been hesitant to talk about his relationship with his father.

“My dad is a brilliant boxing mind,” he said. “It would be good to have him in my corner because if I’m having an issue or something, he would help me out. But I already know everything that he would tell me anyway.”

Jones Sr. said much of the talk about how he trained his son was hyperbole.

He said he used a small piece of PVC pipe to “tap him every now and then.”

“I gave him whatever he needed, if you want to call that being hard on him,” Jones Sr. said. “Whatever was done, regardless of how he sees it in his mind, he benefited from it. That was the main objective — to make him a success.”

The reports by Star and In Touch magazines claimed that the ”Friends” star was pregnant, and was probably expecting twins, reports Usmagazine.com
