Tom Cruise tells Oprah he wants more challenges

Monday, May 5th, 2008 - No Comments »

Hollywood’s stars paid tribute to Tom Cruise on Monday’s Oprah Winfrey television show, with the actor saying he hoped for more challenging roles and to work with the likes of Al Pacino and Robert DeNiro. In the second of two interviews with Cruise, Winfrey aired highlights since the actor’s breakthrough role 25 years in 1983’s “Risky Business,” including a seemingly death-defying stunt from “Mission: Impossible 2″ in which a bare-chested Cruise leaps across a rocky cliff.

Cruise said he dangled from a thin wire during four days of shooting the scene.

The movie clips were interspersed with videotaped congratulations from a long lineup of celebrity friends and co-stars, including actors Will Smith, Dustin Hoffman, and Renee Zellweger, director Steven Spielberg, soccer player David Beckham and his wife, Victoria.

Cruise repaid the compliments in full, saying he hoped to work with “so many” other actors, among them Pacino and De Niro.

“I’m actually surprised how much I’ve accomplished,” the 45-year-old actor said, responding to an audience member’s question about whether he had done everything he set out to do.

“I feel really privileged to do what I do, and I thank you for allowing me to entertain you,” he said. “As you go along, you think, ‘how can I keep challenging myself even more?’

“I feel at home on that movie set. A lot of times I show up before the crew. And I feel this is what I’m supposed to do.”

Man Arrrested Following Malicious Attack On WWE Website

Tuesday, April 22nd, 2008 - No Comments »

Over the weekend WWE.com launched the WWE Fan Nation, a social networking site. The network lets people create personal profiles to communicate with other WWE fans. So far, the network has garnered over 7,000 registered users. You can check out WWE’s answer to MySpace and Facebook at http://Fans.WWE.com. However, on Saturday night/Sunday morning, the site was infiltrated by a few vicious users looking to wreak havoc on WWE’s social networking site. The website was closed on Sunday to clean out all the “graffiti” (including pornographic images) left by the attackers.

According to the website of RTE — Ireland’s National Television and Radio Broadcaster — police managed to track down and arrest one of the attackers, a man from Dublin, Ireland. In accordance with the Communications Regulation Act from 2002, the Dublin man has been detained by police. So far he is the only person to be charged, although WWE is looking to take action against the others involved in the attack.

A number of people were involved in the cyber attack, but so far, only one person has been charged. However, WWE’s in the process of tracking down the other cyber attackers and forwarding their information to law enforcement agencies.

Bullying

Tuesday, April 22nd, 2008 - No Comments »

Nelson200 Bullies take their toll long after the vulnerable high school years. A new study reported in the journal Psychology in the Schools found that the consequences of social bullying—gossip, rumors, verbal back-stabbing—linger into the victims’ adulthood in the form of depression and anxiety.

The lead researcher, Allison Dempsey, says she was set on her course to study bullying by her home town experience. She graduated from Columbine High School in Littleton, Col., in 1998, the year before the 1999 shootings there that killed 12 students, a teacher, and the two shooters, Dylan Klebold and Eric Harris. The two boys who committed the murders, it was later reported, were shunned by the school’s cliques.

University of Florida researchers studied 210 college students and found a relationship between being bullied in adolescence and later depression and anxiety in young adulthood. “Even though people are outside of high school, the memories of these experiences continue to be associated with depression and social anxiety,” said Dempsey,. “It was interesting to see these relationships still continue to exist even though they are in early adulthood now and in a completely different setting.”

The researchers found no gender differences in social bullying and later mental health consequences. And, in a surprising result, they found that for many young adults, a network of friends didn’t necessarily protect them from depression and anxiety. Some children, co-author Eric Storch, professor of psychiatry at the University of Florida, said in the press release, “…take the words and abuse more to heart and begin to believe what’s being said about them.” Even if they have a supportive circle of friends.

The full journal article requires payment, but you can read the abstract, or find further details in the university’s press release.

The problem is widespread. A story in the March 7, 2008, Los Angeles Times, “Meaner bullying is leading schools to find new tactics,” reported on how some students, parents, teachers and school administrators are fighting back by reporting bullying incidents and trying to change school culture.
