Gwyneth Paltrow is supporting her pop star friend Madonna through her divorce, the Hollywood actress has revealed.

At the premiere of her new file Two Lovers, part of the BFI London Film Festival, the Oscar winner said: “She’s a very good friend. I’m supporting her in all the ways that I can. I’m just there for her. I speak to her a lot.”

The pair have a well publicised friendship and are both yoga fans as well as splitting their time between the US and UK.

Paltrow’s new film, in which she stars with Joaquin Phoenix, tells the tale of a heartbroken man whose parents set him up with the daughter of a family friend.

But he meets Michelle (Paltrow) a volatile woman who has recently moved into the same apartment block.

Wearing a long black dress Paltrow, who will start work on Iron Man II next year, said she was attracted to the film because of director James Gray’s European sensibilities.

But the award-winning actress said she has no intention of overworking.

She said: “I’ll never do the five movies a year thing ever again but one or two good ones, I’m game.”

The wife of Coldplay front man, has launched a newsletter Goop, with lifestyle tips for fans.

Asked where the strange name came from, she said: “It means anything. GP are my initials and it’s an old nickname.”

Saints RB Reggie Bush to have knee surgery

New Orleans running back Reggie Bush is scheduled to undergo arthroscopic knee surgery Monday that is expected to sideline him three to four weeks, a Saints source told NFL Network’s Adam Schefter.

The Saints believe Bush has injured the meniscus in his left knee in Sunday’s loss to Carolina.

However, the Saints have a bye after their game in London against the Chargers, so Bush could wind up missing only one game, reports Schefter. But exactly how long Bush will be out, and how many games he will miss, will not be known until doctors perform Monday’s surgery.

Bush will not travel with the Saints to London.

Bush injured his left knee on a punt return late in the first half. He reversed field on his run, which ended when he stepped out of bounds on the Carolina sideline. He seemed to pull up a bit and favor his left leg after that.

Bush missed practice earlier this week with swelling in his left knee, but the Saints said the injury was not serious.

Bush had 55 yards on nine carries, caught one pass for 5 yards, and had a 3.5 average on three punt returns against Carolina.

Payton said the Saints became “one-dimensional” after Bush left the game, which the Panthers won 30-7.

But quarterback Drew Brees noted the Saints played the final four games of last season without Bush — they went 2-2 while he was out with a knee injury — and proved this year they could persevere when tight end Jeremy Shockey and receiver Marques Colston missed games.

“Of course it’s tough. He’s a big-time playmaker,” Brees said. “We’re going to miss him, and I hope he’s not out very long.”

Text messaging

A family that texts together, stays together. Or at least it stays in touch better.

Today’s families with minor children are much more likely than any other household types to have cellphones and use the Internet, a study by the Pew Internet & American Life Project reports today.

The phone survey of 2,252 adults, between Dec. 13, 2007, and Jan. 13, 2008, also shows that families use those technologies to stay in touch with each other throughout the day.

“It used to be in the old Dick and Jane days, husbands went off to work, wives went off to a different job or else stayed home … and the kids went off to school,” says study co-author Barry Wellman, professor at the University of Toronto. “And not until 5:30, 6 o’clock did they ever connect.”

But now husbands e-mail wives. Daughters call moms. Sons e-mail parents.

“There’s a new kind of connectedness being built inside of families with these technologies,” says Lee Rainey, director of the project.

When Jim Daly, an editor for a Web company who lives in Alameda, Calif., wanted to call his teenage daughter down to dinner, he called her on her cellphone.

He knew she’d answer because “text message and cellphone messages are much more important” to her, says Daly, 48.

Daly is in constant contact with his wife, a freelance editor who works from home, during the day via e-mail and cellphone.

So are millions of other Americans. According to the survey:

• About 89% of married (or partnered) parents with children own multiple cellphones.

• 66% have high-speed broadband Internet connections in their homes (compared with a national average of 52%).

• 70% of couples in which both partners have cellphones contact each other daily just to say hello, 64% contact each other to coordinate schedules, and 42% of parents contact their children daily using a cellphone.

When the Internet arose, some worried that it would pull families apart, Rainie said. But for perhaps the first time, this study indicates fairly definitely that technology is bringing them together by allowing them to have constant contact, Rainie says.

Most families say technology has either helped their communication with other family members or made no difference. Very few say it has made communication worse.

For some kids, that might become a double-edged sword, but Emily Wilson, 15, of New York City loves it. “For me, it’s really easy and it’s been a big benefit. I can always get in contact with (her parents) no matter what. I’m never out of touch with them.”

For instance, when Emily was shopping for sunglasses in Manhattan, she became concerned what her mother, who was in the Hamptons, would think of them. So Emily sent a picture — via BlackBerry — of her modeling the new shades. Within seconds, her mom sent a message back: Approval granted.

Now she says she knows “I can go shopping without my mom and have her approve what I’m buying.”

Her mom, a longtime techie, loves it, too. Her husband, Fred, likes to Twitter. Her whole family stays in touch electronically.

“We’re a very close-knit family,” says Joanne Wilson. “But it takes the connection to a whole other level. There’s a constant connection.”

Bernard Hopkins Slapped Around Kelly Pavlik For 12 Rounds

Sunday, October 19th, 2008 - No Comments »

Bernard Hopkins used an assortment of punches to completely dominate Kelly Pavlik and scored a unanimous 12-round decision in a non-title light-heavyweight fight at Boardwalk Hall.

Hopkins (49-5-1) at times toyed with his much younger opponent, using several bolo punches that landed solidly on Pavlik, 17 years Hopkins’ junior.

Pavlik (34-1) moved up to the light heavyweight category for this fight and suffered the first defeat of his professional career after going undefeated as middleweight champion.

The 26-year-old Pavlik, who entered the bout as more than a 4-1 favourite, absorbed the bulk of Hopkins’ various left jabs, overhand rights and numerous left-right combinations that left the fighter from Youngstown, Ohio totally confused. Pavlik hung in there until the end as both fighters continued to exchange blows as the final bell sounded.

“Pavlik is tough. He’s a great champion,” Hopkins said. “He was very heavy-handed and I could feel his power, but he never hurt me, because I made sure he never hit me flush.”

Judges Alan Rubenstein (119-106), Steven Weisfeld (118-108) and Barbara Perez (117-109) all gave Hopkins a substantial margin of victory with Rubenstein awarding Hopkins all 12 rounds.

The 43-year-old Hopkins glared defiantly at the media assembled at ringside as the final scorecards were announced.

Hopkins made references to two earlier victories over opponents that were favoured to beat the 43-year-old from Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.

“You (the media) all got a right to voice your opinion, but I wanted to look and stare, like I did when I beat Tito (Trinidad) as a 4-to-1 underdog,” Hopkins said.

“I did the same stare when I beat (Antonio) Tarver, because I wanted to let you all know that you all had somebody special amongst you and you all ain’t gonna realise it until I’m gone.”

Lindsay Lohan Blogging

Lindsay Lohan’s back to blogging on her MySpace, but her latest entry has us asking WTF?!

Unlike her former musings, which were articulate and intelligent, the most recent edition is beyond bizarre.

We’re able to discern that she’s blogging from a computer in a Washington, D.C., nightclub while Sam Ronson spins.

“Washington, D.C.-you’re in a club, you are here for support for someone that you care for very much, VERY MUCH,” L.L. blogs. “But, you’re here just to chill and support, not to be seen and heard… Not to be on display in the dj booth…or to feel as if you are in a cage at the Bronx Zoo…Do you see what i am getting at???”

Um, not really, Linds. But then she starts talking Sarah Palin and totally loses us.

“Sitting here makes me think about the fact that if Sarah Palin was in office, and living in Washington.. On a “slow” night, she would probably be dressing as one of the gossip girls or tina fey to try and “be cool” enough to get into this club.”
