myspace.com music myspace social networking network bad music deal done awful

After months of speculation, MySpace relaunched its music site in the U.S. with the support of the four major recording companies. The new site comes with free streaming music and the ability to create and share playlists. MySpace needed to revamp the site, as we wrote about in today’s paper, to keep up with fast-moving music upstarts such as iMeem and Last.fm.

Reviews so far have been mixed. It’s like Napster… with a business model, says AllThingsD. You can tell the lawyers got out of the way, says paidContent, because “if the song is in the catalog, you can listen to what you want, as many times as you want, in any order you want, without interruption.”

But it’s still too cluttered, says Silicon Alley Insider. That’s fine if MySpace Music wants to just keep its current audience happy. Not so good if it wants to be the central music stop on the Internet. Just 14% of people online have accessed music via social networks, according to the NPD Group. That leaves a lot of people who haven’t found their social network music hangout yet and could make MySpace their place.

We’ve been playing around with it this morning and found that searching for some songs or a particular artist can be a challenge, an experience shared by Sonal Gandhi, an analyst at Jupiter Research, who told us she had the same problem, even with some of the featured artists.

“It’s not a full offering,” she said. “In the Web world, companies launch and improve on it, and over time, it becomes better. That’s MySpace’s strategy.”

It’s also not clear how to buy a song for some of the artists, something others such as Idolator have experienced when trying to buy the Top 10 digital tracks. Amazon is powering the e-commerce portion of the site, which one would think would be well-oiled since it is one of the few ways to get hard cash.

Matt Graves, vice president of marketing at iMeem, the music-centric social network, said it’s great that MySpace lets users build playlists. But the constraints MySpace appears to place on the playlist, such as limiting the number of songs and restricting where people listen to the music, may be a problem for many.

“On iMeem, the length of your playlist is limited only by your imagination,” he said.

Of course, iMeem and others have a stake in the MySpace launch too: They hope that MySpace will bring a lot of attention to music social services without sucking up all the advertising dollars.

The MTV show that helped launch the careers of Britney Spears, *N Sync and Eminem is to end after 10 years on air.

The music channel’s popular “Total Request Live” show has been axed, with the final show airing in November.

Launched in 1998, the show featured hot new music videos, and viewers were introduced to their favorite pop stars through exclusive interviews.

Former “TRL” host Carson Daly is expected to return for the two-hour special finale.

And stars who shot to fame on the show are sad to see it go. Rapper Eminem told the Associate Press that he’ll miss causing trouble on the beloved series.

He says, “I’m going to miss TRL. Where else will I be able to start feuds, defend my honor vigorously and act like an angry teenager on national TV? Oh wait … The VMAs!”

Rap star Kanye West was arrested at Los Angeles International Airport on Thursday after scuffling with photographers and smashing a camera, an airport spokesman said.

West’s bodyguard also was taken into custody after he grabbed a television camera and threw it to the ground, said celebrity Web site TMZ.com, whose cameraman was involved.

Los Angeles airport spokesman Alberto Rodriguez said West, 31, and his bodyguard were booked on suspicion of felony vandalism. The bodyguard also faces a possible charge of battery.

They were released on bail. Prosecutors have not yet decided whether to press charges.

“We will wait for the police to complete their investigation,” said Jane Robison, spokeswoman for the Los Angeles District Attorney’s office.

Rodriguez said the two were arrested on Thursday morning outside the passenger security screening area.

TMZ, which caught much of the incident on camera, said West rushed toward a photographer and grabbed his camera. A struggle followed and West took the camera and threw it to the ground.

His bodyguard then ordered the TMZ cameraman to stop taping and to hand over his camera.

“The assistant then grabbed the camera, ripped off the mic and viewfinder and smashed it to the ground,” TMZ said.

Britney Spears to raise curtain on MTV awards

Britney Spears is to star at this year’s MTV Video Music Awards, a year after a calamitous comeback performance at the same award ceremony. But this time the pop singer won’t be performing.

Spears will be opening the 25th annual edition of the MTV VMAs on Sunday at Paramount Studios in Hollywood, according to MTV’s website.

That means she will be on hand if she wins an award. Spears has garnered three nominations for the clip to her single “Piece of Me” — Best Female Video, Best Pop Video and Video of the Year.

“MTV has long played an important role in my career,” Spears said in a statement. “How can I not be there to kick off their 25th VMAs? I’m excited to open the entire show, to say hi to my fans and to be nominated.”

Exactly how she planned to open the show remained unclear. In previous appearances she has kissed Madonna and performed with a writhing snake.

Spears has yet to win an MTV Video Music Award, and her nominations this year are particularly tantalizing after her much-derided appearance in 2007, when she lip-synched her way through a dance number in an ill-fitting black bikini.

Coming off two marriages, two children and two stints in rehab, Spears sought to launch a career comeback on last year’s show with a performance of the song “Gimme More” that proved a publicity bomb for her but a ratings boon for MTV.

But with Spears said to be cleaning up her act and back in the recording studio this summer, working on a new album, MTV has made the most of the suspense surrounding her possible return to the VMAs, refusing until Wednesday to say whether she might appear as a presenter or performer.

The MTV VMAs, long considered a hipper version of the Grammys, will be broadcast live on MTV on September 7, hosted by British comedian Russell Brand.
