Jay-Z to Quit His Day Job as President of Def Jam

jay-z quits def jam

After an unusual three-year turn in the corporate suite, Jay-Z, the rap superstar, said Monday that he would step down from his post as president of Def Jam Recordings, one of the world’s best-known record labels.

Jay-Z made the announcement with Def Jam’s parent, Universal Music Group, as his employment contract was expiring. Under a separate long-term recording contract with Def Jam, Jay-Z, whose real name is Shawn Carter, still owes the company one or more albums.

Jay-Z’s exit from the executive role comes after Universal, a division of Vivendi, declined to renew the contract under more lucrative terms he sought, according to people briefed on the talks, who requested anonymity because the negotiations were confidential. Under the deal that is expiring, Universal was to pay Jay-Z in the range of $10 million over the course of the contract, if he hit certain financial targets.

Jay-Z offered no hints at his future plans. “It’s time for me to take on new challenges,” he said in a statement.

But he is already one of music’s most ambitious entrepreneurs, with business interests that include nightclubs, an investment in the New Jersey Nets and a fashion line. His next move is unclear, though there has been speculation that he might strike a deal with the concert giant Live Nation, which has been seeking stakes in artists’ various business lines beyond concerts.

It is not clear whether Universal will fill the job Jay-Z is vacating.

Though Universal pursued Jay-Z as an executive so that he could imbue Def Jam’s then-uncertain rap business with credibility, he leaves with a mixed legacy. Under his leadership, Def Jam released two top-selling albums from Kanye West, the producer turned rapper who first came to Def Jam through Jay-Z’s own imprint, Roc-a-Fella Records.

But elsewhere, Jay-Z’s results have ranged from muddled to lackluster. The rap act Young Jeezy enjoyed a smash debut but a modest follow-up album and sales of rappers like Freeway and Beanie Sigel have been slow.

On the pop side, Jay-Z is credited with discovering the top-selling pop act Rihanna, and as a performer he lent his skills to an array of Universal acts, even rapping on a version of “Rehab,” the best-selling single from Amy Winehouse, the British retro-soul singer.

Jay-Z, one of the best-selling rappers in music history, also found that running the record label releasing his album does not always guarantee success. His 2006 album, “Kingdom Come,” sold about 1.5 million copies, an underwhelming figure for him.

He has said the album was somewhat too “sophisticated” for some fans. But his latest album, “American Gangster,” which was inspired by the Denzel Washington movie of the same name and acclaimed by critics, has also performed modestly so far, selling about 784,000 copies in its first six weeks on sale.

R. Kelly Avoids Arrest

R. Kelly may have just traded the closet for the great state of Illinois. Either way, he could be trapped.

The rapper managed to avoid arrest Thursday morning by appearing, at last, in a Chicago courtroom for a hearing in his long-pending child-pornography case. But his good fortune—and travel privileges—may end there.

Patience-tried Cook County Criminal Court Judge Vincent Gaughan said he was “very disappointed” about Kelly’s Wednesday no-show, not just because of its lack of respect toward the court but because the rapper had specifically requested his hearing be moved to that date for “financial reasons.”

He further told the 40-year-old R&B star, who is currently in the midst of a 45-city tour, that the court will be reviewing the terms of Kelly’s bond and decide on Friday whether it should be revoked or whether to bar the “I Believe I Can Fly” star from traveling outside the state, effectively putting the kibosh on the remainder of his tour.

Gaughan is also expected to set a start date for Kelly’s trial on Friday, a date nearly six years in the making. After endless delays and pretrial motions from the defense, proceedings were expected to kick off on Sept. 17, but were—at least until now—indefinitely pushed back.

Kelly’s Thursday appearance came a day after Gaughan threatened to activate a bench warrant for the singer’s arrest should he not appear in court by 9 a.m. The warning was issued at the urging of state prosecutors, who called his MIA status not only “disrespectful” but an “abuse of the process.”

Kelly’s attorney, Ed Genson, told the judge his client had every intention of making it to the court on Wednesday, but circumstances beyond his control—namely inclement weather and Utah’s finest—prevented him from making it on time.

Per Genson, Kelly was en route to Chicago from a tour stop in Sacramento, only to have the bus trip delayed by snowy weather. On Tuesday morning, shortly after the four-bus caravan was able to get back on the road, they were pulled over for speeding by the Utah Highway Patrol, at which time officers also found the drivers hadn’t taken mandatory rest time.

The buses were due to be put out of service for eight hours, but thanks to some legal finagling, were able to get back on the road after no more than four hours of idling.

While the buses were parked, Kelly was free to go. Yet, he opted to remain with his tour crew.

In 2002, Kelly was charged with child pornography after being accused of videotaping himself having sex with an underage girl, who prosecutors say may have been as young as 13 years old at the time. He denies the charges, but could face up to 15 years in prison if convicted.

2007: By The Numbers, In Bigger Than The Sound

Thursday, December 20th, 2007 - No Comments »

If you go by the numbers (or, really, any other indicator), 2007 was the worst 12-month period the music industry has ever seen. Sales of albums were down some 15 percent from ‘06, continuing an eight-year trend of redefining the term “scraping the bottom of the barrel.” The “Dreamgirls” soundtrack set the record for the lowest chart-topping sales total (66,000 copies) then shattered it the following week (60,000). Will.I.Am’s solo effort, Songs About Girls, was outsold by an Iron and Wine record, The Shepherd’s Dog. By 10,000 copies. People quibbled over the difference between 320 and 160 kilobits, debated whether the Billboard 200 even mattered anymore and tried very hard to tell the difference between Finger Eleven and OneRepublic (hint: one of them is from Canada).

Yes, it was bad times all around … so bad, in fact, that no mere essay could encapsulate it all. But the numbers don’t lie. So, in order to rub salt in the wounds/ kick a man when he’s down/ flog a dead horse/ get out of writing an actual column this week since it’s almost the end of the year and I’ve mentally checked out, I’m presenting 2007: By the Numbers, a list of figures, digits and stats that accurately sums up the year that was, and is almost entirely based in fact (surely a first for Bigger Than the Sound).

I’m also including a couple of reader top 10s that were submitted after my massive 20 Best Albums of 2007 column from last week. Boy, you guys sure hate Against Me!

(Oh, and this will be my final BTTS of the year. I’ll be back in 2008, provided the contents of this column don’t get me fired. Happy holidays, everyone.)

And now … let’s get numeric:

» Number of angry e-mails I received from radio DJs with names like Spike, Lazlo or Dash after the Why Are Radio DJs So Dumb column of June 6: 55

» Number of angry e-mails I got from a Thrice fan/employee at the Guitar Hangar in Brookfield, Connecticut, that encouraged me to “go [eat] sh– from a dying whale’s ass” and were signed “Someone with far better musical taste than you”: 1

» Number of apologetic e-mails I received from the owner of Guitar Hangar after he read his employee’s e-mail and “spoke to him about sending out this kind of e-mail from our company’s e-mail system”: 1

Bow Wow Rushed To The Hospital After Concert

Friday, December 7th, 2007 - 2 Comments »

Bow Wow gave his camp a scare Thursday night when the 20-year-old rapper had to be rushed to a Cincinnati hospital after his concert performance at the U.S. Bank Arena.

Bow is said to be doing well but is still in the hospital undergoing tests. His record company, Sony Music, said in a statement on Friday (December 7) that the young superstar appears to be suffering from “stress and exhaustion.”

Not only has Bow been one of the top-line acts on his current tour with Chris Brown, Sean Kingston, Soulja Boy, Lil Mama and others, but he’s also been all over the world during the past few months promoting Face Off, his joint LP with Omarion, which drops Tuesday.

The tour hits Chicago on Friday night, but Bow will not be cleared to take the stage, according to Sony.

“He loves them and will be sure to come back to Chicago soon!” his company said of what Bow wants to express to fans.

Bow is expected to return to the tour very shortly, and as an added bonus, Omarion will be joining the tour on some select dates, which have yet to be announced. If you listen to the duo’s new LP, you can expect Bow and O to hit the road with a full show of their own in 2008. On the title track, Bow proclaims, “Rest in peace to the Scream Tour. It’s the Face Off tour next summer.”
