Heath Ledger: Fallen Star

In the spring of 2001, Heath Ledger sat at the bar in New York City’s Regency Hotel, perched on the precipice of a kind of fame he wasn’t sure he wanted. The 22-year-old Australian actor was about to appear in his first leading role in a Hollywood summer tentpole, a splashy rock & roll jousting movie called A Knight’s Tale, and the newfound attention seemed to make him uncomfortable. As he spoke with a reporter for this magazine, he chain-smoked Camel Lights, fidgeted, and doodled with crayons on cocktail napkins, pressing so hard that the paper ripped. He said that the first time he’d seen his image on the movie’s poster, wearing full medieval armor and a hard stare, he felt so nervous he shook. Out in Hollywood, many were busily mapping out his future for him: big-dollar paydays, hordes of screaming fans trailing his every move, spandex-clad-superhero roles. In fact, he had already been offered the starring role in the newly launched Spider-Man franchise and turned it down. (”I just don’t care for comics,” he said matter-of-factly. ”It would have been stealing someone else’s dream.”) In the face of all of Hollywood’s promises and pressures, Ledger seemed to have his eyes on something more ethereal and indefinable. ”I’m on a f—ing journey,” he said. ”I’m on a walkabout. A lot of people think ambition or success, and they think dollars…. My success is getting underneath that. At the f—ing end of the day, that’s the only thing you’re going to carry with you when you die.”

Tragically, that journey ended on the afternoon of Jan. 22, when the actor was found dead at age 28 in his rented apartment in Manhattan’s SoHo neighborhood. Ledger was discovered naked in his bed by a housekeeper and a masseuse who had arrived for a regular appointment, a package of ”prescription-type” sleeping pills nearby. (In a New York Times interview last November, Ledger had complained of having difficulty sleeping due to stress, to the point where a double dose of Ambien would only buy him an hour of rest.) There were no illegal drugs in the apartment, chief police spokesman Paul J. Browne reported, no evidence of foul play, and no initial indication of suicide. Pending an autopsy, it was unclear at press time what caused his death and whether prescription medications played a role.

The tragedy struck in the midst of an already hectic day in the entertainment industry, as Hollywood reacted to the morning’s announcement of the Oscar nominations and the latest buzz emanating from Sundance. But word spread with lightning speed via cell phones and BlackBerries, and in nearly every case was met with disbelief. One high-ranking studio exec, after receiving an e-mail stating that Ledger was dead, quickly wrote back: ”What — you mean his career?” Charlize Theron learned the news while walking a red carpet at Sundance. Josh Hartnett was blindsided at a Sundance Q&A by a question about Ledger’s death; he struggled to answer even as the crowd jeered the man who had asked it. The passing of an actor in his prime — he earned his first Oscar nomination at age 26 for Ang Lee’s Brokeback Mountain and was just months away from reinventing the Joker in the highly anticipated Batman Begins sequel, The Dark Knight — seemed too shocking to absorb at first, while at the same time painfully familiar. Within minutes of the story breaking, some 300 entertainment reporters, cameramen, photographers, and fans began to descend on Ledger’s building, creating a tableau that resembled a grisly perversion of a movie premiere. Bystanders snapped photos on cellphones and paparazzi climbed the fire escape of the building across the street hoping for shots into Ledger’s fourth-floor loft. ”It’s crazy — he was so young,” said one stunned observer.

Britney Spears is courting to reclaim her kids.

Sources close to the “Gimme More” singer confirm to E! News that Spears will appear in court Wednesday morning to ask a court commissioner to restore her visitation rights for her sons withKevin Federline, Sean Preston and Jayden James.

The emergency hearing was called by Spears’ attorneys at the behest of the 26-year-old entertainer and will come two days after she finally showed up for a deposition in her long-playing custody dispute with Federline. The next scheduled court date for the former wasn’t until Feb. 19.

Spears is expected to attend the 8:30 meeting along with manager Sam Lutfi, who accompanied her to the Monday session.

Los Angeles Court Commissioner Scott Gordon stripped Spears of visitation rights after she refused to return the boys at the prescribed time back on Jan. 3, leading to a tense standoff with police and, ultimately, her forced hospitalization. The children, who remain in the care of Federline, 29, have not seen their mom since.

According to TMZ, Spears will seek monitored visits with the boys in a “therapeutic setting.”

Meanwhile, Spears is expected to continue being deposed by Federline attorney Mark Vincent Kaplan in the coming days.

Speaking to reporters on Monday evening, Kaplan said that he questioned Spears for about 40 minutes, even though she was present in his office for over two hours.

“We are going over things that are very, very gut-wrenching,” Kaplan told People. “It’s not something anyone would enjoy.”

Asked by Access Hollywood if he believed Spears would be able to see her children soon, the attorney said, “There are certain things that have to be done by her in order to make everyone comfortable—and to answer any unresolved questions so that we don’t have to worry about anything that occurred a few weeks ago.

“She is not the enemy. She is not being viewed as the enemy, and what is being done, even though it may be unpopular with her, is to make sure that she can be a full participant going forward in the future.”

Heidi’s Boob Job Finally Pays Off

Heidi Montag, Maxim MagazineHeidi Montag really is really living the American dream. She’s just a small-town girl from Colorado making it big on the blogs and getting the Maxim cover she’s dreamed of ever since the boys in high school called her a surfboard. It must be so awesome to be her!

This Maxim shoot isn’t all about the slutty pictures, though. Heidi’s got some things to say. Important things like L.C. has gone Hollywood and is “a big diva now.”

Somehow getting a nose job, breast implants, recent lip plumping and looking to parlay minor reality stardom into a viable singing career does not seem Hollywood to her.

And about the whole plastic surgery thing, Heidi has this to say:

It’s funny. Almost everyone on the show has had some kind of surgery. They were saying malicious things about me, and I was like, “You guys are hypocrites—trying to make me look bad when you’ve done things to yourselves!”

Juicy! Excuse us while we begin comparing before-and-after shots of Lauren…

Did Brit Dump Adnan

Remember Britney’s paparazzo boyfriend, Adnan Ghalib? You know, the one who traveled with her to Mexico, escorted her on countless Starbucks runs and even hit her local Rite Aid to check out home pregnancy tests?

Well, apparently she doesn’t.

Fellow paparazzi quizzed Brit about her relationship this weekend when they caught up with her at the Millennium Dance Complex in North Hollywood.

When asked, “Do you have something to tell Adnan,” she replied, “I don’t know who that is…I’ve never met him before,” all in her mock British accent.

Granted, the two haven’t been spotted together in the past few days and rumors of a restraining order against Adnan were reported by a rival agency.

But Brit’s maybe man has an explanation, which he conveniently posted on the Website of his photo agency, FinalPixx:

“All I can say is I have not been in contact with Britney since early Friday morning. The reason being that I have had to attend a family funeral in Santa Barbara.”

The photog goes on to say his phone has been off out of respect for his family members, and he hopes to get back in touch with “Miss Spears” when he gets back to town.

So, whom to believe? One of Brit’s split personalities or a grieving celebrity photographer?

Don’t ask us to decide. We’re gonna hold off for now on calling this relationship over. Given Brit’s track record, she could be announcing her engagement as early as this afternoon.
